Tallavey Cottages Green Policy

Helping our guests to help our community

Tallavey Cottages is the proud holder of a Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award. We place a strong emphasis on sustainability at Tallavey and we want you to be assured that we do everything we can to ensure that our business has the least possible impact on the environment. In this document, you can find out what we do to help the environment and what you can do during your stay to help.

We Reduce Waste

We recycle and compost as much of our waste as possible with the compost being used in the gardens. Paper free online booking means we need very few consumables. Our website acts as our 'online brochure' and eliminates the need for a paper brochure. Our flyers and business cards are made from recycled paper.

We Conserve Water

We have a water butt onsite for watering plants. We steam clean floors instead of wasting buckets of water. Bed linen and towels are washed on an eco setting. All taps and showers are fitted with aerators to ensure maximum efficiency. We provide glass bottles to chill tap water. We have a water meter to help us monitor and manage our water consumption.

We Are Sustainable

Underfloor heating and water heating are provided by our UK-made environmentally friendly wood-pellet boiler with FSC certified pellets sourced locally. Our electricity is supplied by Octopus Energy from 100% renewable sources and we have a Smart Meter to help us monitor and manage our energy consumption. We have an EV chargepoint onsite.

We Care for the Environment

We use eco friendly cleaning products and cloths and provide guests with Smol and Method products. We provide organic, handmade soap for our guests from small local supplier, It’s Only Natural. Our loo roll is sourced from Who Gives A Crap - it's made from 100% environmentally friendly materials and over 50% of their profits are donated to help build toilets for those in need.

We Think About our Supply Chain

We purchase environmentally friendly materials and buy local whenever we can and instead of buying new have upcycled some items of furniture. Our welcome pack contains homemade goodies with ingredients sourced locally to cut down on food miles. Both cottages feature the work of local artists and our welcome folders and signs were made by The Workshop - a social enterprise in Aberfeldy.

We are Committed

We are members of Green Tourism UK and are active in our local community. Clare sits on a local small grant assessment panel, is a qualified fire-fighter with the local volunteer fire service and is a Trustee of Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust. We donate £1 from every booking to the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Trees for Life and Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance. We worked with the award-winning MyTravelPledge initiative to provide discounted stays for frontline health and care sector workers. We have completed training run by Zero Waste Scotland and Clare is a certified Green Champion.

We Reduce Energy Consumption

Our cottages are well insulated to maximise energy efficiency and have thermostatically controlled underfloor heating. Towel heaters are timed to come on twice a day to dry towels instead of all day and night. Our eco-friendly hot tubs are have extra insulation to prevent heat loss. All indoor lighting is provided by LEDs and external lighting is a combination of LED and solar. A++ efficiency appliances are fitted throughout. Both Cottages are C rated for energy efficiency and A rated for environmental impact under the EPC Scotland Scheme. Our EPC certificates can be found here: Cottage 1; Cottage 2.

We Encourage Wildlife

Our rural location means that we have an abundance of wildlife. We have conserved and protected their habitats, creating wild areas on site and using indigenous plants, flowers and trees in our landscaping. We have a number of nesting boxes for both birds and mammals and a large variety of feeders for birds and red squirrels. Our choice of plant species is carefully considered to encourage bees, birds and bats alike and we have deliberately preserved a number of dead trees around the site as pollinator havens. The fresh flowers that welcome our guests are sourced from the garden, not flown in from overseas.

We Raise Awareness

We report data weekly to the British Trust for Ornithology and participate in the annual Great Scottish Squirrel Survey. Guests are encouraged to help by noting down the wildlife you see in a nature diary. Wildlife identification guides, binoculars and star charts are provided. We work with other local, environmentally aware businesses, including Nature Nuts, Outdoor Explore, Nordic Walking Highland Perthshire and Perthshire Treks to organise wildlife walks and kayak trips for our guests. Secure bike storage is available for those able to enjoy ‘car free’ days. We provide information about local activities, shops and eateries to help our guests make the most of their stay with us and reduce their impact on the local environment.

What Our Guests Can Do

There are lots of things we can each do to reduce our impact on the environment and make our lives more sustainable.

Act Now

Manage Waste Effectively

Sort any recyclable waste into the mixed or glass recycling and sort bathroom waste into general (small opening) and mixed recyclables (large opening). You will find a sustainable bottle bag hanging up on the coat pegs. Either leave the glass for us to recycle for you, or you could use the bag to take it to the glass recycling point in the Cateran Trail car park (0.5 mile walk). Collect food waste in the food waste bin provided and we will compost it. Don't throw away leftover food when you leave, we'll see it gets used or composted.

Conserve Water and Energy

Turn off taps when you have finished. Use the room thermostats to adjust the temperatures. We suggest 18-20 in the daytime and 15-18 at night. To help conserve energy, turn down the thermostats rather than leaving the windows open when the heating is on. Switch off lights when you go out. Use energy efficient programmes when using the dishwasher and washing machine.

Support Local Businesses

Buy local food and services whilst you are here to help the local community that you came to visit. Details of local facilities, shops, restaurants and activities can be found in the map boxes in each cottage. Place orders with local food suppliers through Kirkmichael Village Shop or NeighbourFood Pitlochry or Blairgowrie and use the local zero waste store, Handam Refill Station, to make sure you don't buy more than you need and avoid food waste.

Lower Your Carbon Footprint

Leave the car behind for a day, take a picnic (you’ll find a picnic set in each cottage) and explore the nearby mountains, countryside and woodland. There are miles of beautiful walks direct from Tallavey. Bring your bikes or hire some locally. We use Climate Care to help our guests offset emissions associated with their stays with us. Or you could plant a tree through Trees for Life in the Tallavey Grove in the Caledonian Forest as a living reminder of your stay that also helps the environment! You can work out your carbon footprint using a carbon calculator.

Be Kind To The Environment

Whenever you are out walking or cycling, always take your rubbish away with you. Don't buy plastic water bottles, you will find refillable drinks containers in the cottages and you are welcome to use these during your stay. Remember: leave only footprints; take only photographs. Use ecological products. This is important for the environment and for our septic tank system. We provide you with Smol and Method cleaning and washings products for use during your stay. Through our membership of the Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust's Love the Cateran Trail Scheme £1 is added to every booking to help maintain one of Scotland's Great Trails.

Think sustainable when you get home

Consider the small actions you can take to reduce your carbon footprint; can you encourage wildlife to your garden by planting wildflowers or trees; could you reduce the amount of waste you produce or introduce home composting; consider monitoring water and energy use; consider installing a water butt for the garden; consider using more sustainable products and buying locally from small shops and producers; and consider switching to 100% renewable energy. Our guests can benefit from discounts with Octopus Energy - ask us about this when you're here. Take a look at our Responsible Visitor Charter, prepared with the support of Green Tourism.
